Where should we strengthen in the summer window and with who?
ME? I would consider these options...

First I would sign a right back with these options on a shortlist...

Almamy Touré of Eintracht Frankfurt

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Almamy_Tour%C3%A9

Lucas Calegari of Fluminense

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucas_Calegari

João Lucas of Santos

Fodé Doucouré of Red Star

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fod%C3%A9_Doucour%C3%A9

Then I would obviously sign the Rice replacement with these options at hand...

Unai Vencedor of Athletic Bilbao

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unai_Vencedor

João Palhinha of Fulham

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jo%C3%A3o_Palhinha

Kouadio (Manu) Koné of Borussia Mönchengladbach

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kouadio_Kon%C3%A9

Then I would go all out for a left sided forward/winger with these options in my shirt chest pocket...

Amine Gouiri of Rennes

Ricardo Horta of Braga

I try to respect a persons view even if I don’t agree with it. For some, getting to this final is worth forgetting the negativity for a while as they have likely never seen us in a European final etc. I wish I could be that way and fair play to Rossal for being more upbeat in that way. Being an old git I have learnt over the years that you shouldn’t really try to regulate what others think but that is hard for a lot of people as I think us miseries ( realists in our minds :-) ) bring them down.

Apologies for that but try not to regulate others is my humble advice as it is a futile exercise :-)

Rossal,

Gammon’s current schtick is that he supposedly thinks the UECL is a two bob competition. Just to go against the grain.

Bet your arse he’ll be screaming the team on like a teenager next Wed from his front room/bedsit.

Re: Where should we strengthen in the summer window and with who?
Why Rossal? It could be a distraction from getting all hysterical like you.....I've done excited before in much better ranking cup finals......and this ranks low for me as a competition sorry feller......doesn't mean it shouldn't for you....and it doesn't mean you can dictate how others feel about it or what they want to discuss prior to it.....there's a nice thread for that which I haven't got involved with because it's not right to do so.....my mood about the final is still one of calmness at the moment....

Re: Where should we strengthen in the summer window and with who?
Nope can't agree with that, I'm afraid due to how this club is run a cup final in a pretty non competitive cup (so much so UEFA put the final in a 20,000 capacity stadium) should not be a distraction as to what needs to be discussed about the summer window.....for starters some of those players playing in that final won't be here next season.....it can't stop because you want to be all happy about being in a final. This is about the possibility of another 10 months of utter shit compared to one night in a final we should have got to.....there is still a week to do what the fuck you want discussion wise on here.....so until the final is upon us it should be a free to discuss what you like.....

Yeah 'where should we strengthen'

Not 'have a massive fucking moan up about how shit we are going to be and speculate about how shit players we may or not sign are going to be'

There is no summer football, from next thursday you can be as doom and gloom as you like

Did you misread the thread title when you clicked into it, Rossal?

If you want to happy clap your way into next week, maybe just dive into the that thread? We'll all be enjoying next Wednesday, don't worry about that.

'The harsh reality is we spent 200 million on 9 players ( including Ings) and 7 of them are squad back ups with Paqueta and Aguerd the only regular starters in the Premiership.'

Paqueta and Aguerd are probably worth about £100m in today's market. That leaves 7 squad players at £14m each, which is probably about right. And a few of those (Scammacca, Downes and Cornet) might turn out to be quite decent in the end. Areola is OK. Even Kehrer has improved a bit. Ings was insurance. Only Emerson is complete dog-shit.

The recruitment was OK, it was the manager who couldn't get the best from them.

Eerie Descent 1:06 Wed May 31

Sadly Eerie a lot of what u way is plausible.

Moyes doesn’t have an attacker on his coaching staff unless u count Nolan? And none of them ( Moyes, Nevin, Nolan) have any experience of setting up teams to keep the ball, press and stretch teams with movement and passing. I heard a rumour that Warbarton was not Moyes choice but was brought in because his teams ( Brentford, QPR, Rangers etc ) were set up to keep possession albeit not always bring results :-)

Anyway, without Moyes and his coaching team knowing how to coach and develop players to play a style that is possession based it’s hardly surprising they or the recruitment team knew what was needed. They “half cooked” it by not getting stronger wing backs and another central midfielder and a quick attacking option alongside Scamacca who can control and pass well. But probably wouldn’t have made a lot of difference because Moyes wasn’t even prepared preseason for the switch in style and was at the WC until a couple of weeks before our first game.

I’m speculating that Moyes thought he could change things gradually or that just buying new players who could pass and control a football better would be enough to change things? Because the team didn’t look like it was coached in preseason to play differently? But as mentioned it don’t help if you ain’t got all the pieces (types of players ) needed.

The harsh reality is we spent 200 million on 9 players ( including Ings) and 7 of them are squad back ups with Paqueta and Aguerd the only regular starters in the Premiership.

This arguably supports the argument that Moyes and coaches never had a clue how to transition our play and were reluctant to do so.

I would add that the ideal is to play in different ways depending on who you are playing because possession based approach can be damaging against teams too. But again takes good coaching and player development, belief in what you are doing ( commitment to the approach).

In summary, the whole season was a disjointed, “half baked” mess which reflected Moyes thinking ( muddled at best ).

All of that is spot on, unfortunately.

Re: Where should we strengthen in the summer window and with who?
ED - Yep, agree with all that and don't forget it won't be looking good for Scamacca if Moyes stays.

Really need fresh full backs, but as said it won't happen this summer, and Rice is going to be a huge miss.

Moyes has already hinted that there won't be a big overhaul in the summer like last year, so it's hard to be optimistic for next season.

Qualifying for the EL will give the whole club a lift and something to look forward to at least, the downside is it's Thu/Sun football again and all the excuses that go with that.

I read that the back up keepers entire output all in is 40 mil, simply outrageous, Sullivan wanted Sam Johnstone from WBA who would have cost nowhere near that and it wouldn't have made any difference to us.

Eerie Descent 1:11 Wed May 31
Re: Where should we strengthen in the summer window and with who?
And I might add, all that whilst losing the HOTY for the last 3 seasons, and our best player by an absolute mile.

Eerie Descent 1:06 Wed May 31
Re: Where should we strengthen in the summer window and with who?
Massive job on our hands. Given the manager 'tried' a different style, and made us a million times worse, it's another season of 'low block' (10 men behind the ball in real terms) and pump it up to a battering ram in 90% of games.

Expect Fabianski to stay, meaning another season on the bench for the only back up keeper in world football on £140k per week.

Cresswell been given a new contract, Emerson on an absolute fortune fortune, so no change there, left back still a massive weakness. Obviously need a quality right back.

We've got a problem at centre back as Aguerd clearly isn't suited to the style of play, and doesn't seem to be a threat at set pieces. In fact, he can't even defend them well, let alone attack, so that's one of our main attacking options gone. Zouma is a walking injury, and Ogbonna is nearly as old as Moyes. He loves spending mega dough on a centre half, so expect a chunk spent there.

Soucek will still be first choice, slow and ponderous, JWP will be Moyes main target and I actually think we'll get him, as no other teams have set pieces as their main attacking MO. So Paqueta once again won't have fluid movement around him, and we'll still see a fantastic talent absolutely lost in our throwback tactics in most games.

We need proper pace on the flanks given the way we play, which we don't really have, we have medium-fast wingers, and people want us to sign another one in Jack Harrison, and that will probably happen. Snodgrass MK2.

And once again, regardless what striker we sign, we'll be relying on Antonio staying fit enough to bulldoze his way through 70 minutes every week, with Danny Ings coming on late. Moyes cannot adapt to a striker that's not an Antonio prototype, so unless we sign one, which I don't think we will...

Yeah, the juices really are flowing.

Vestergaard from Leicester and Caleta-Car from Southampton would be two solid signings at the back IMO.

If Bayern are talking at £95m for Rice it starts the auction.
Like most I'd prefer him to go abroad rather than play against us.
£80m & Sadio Mane & you have a deal
